In plain English, stress is a reaction to an outside force that throws your body out of whack.
Interestingly, physical stressors can cause psychological symptoms, as in the depression that one may feel as a result of a prolonged physical illness; and psychological stressors can cause physical symptoms, as in the nauseous feeling you may get as a result of bad news.
Prolonged and excessive psychological stress can lead to anxiety syndrome, which can be characterized as a feeling of apprehension, or fear. Sometimes the specific causes of anxiety can be specified, as determined in a case that it causes anxiety, but often the results of the anxiety syndrome cumulative effect of a variety of different stress factors, none of which are particularly harmful for themselves, but when they combined to much anguish. The effects of excessive stress on health are far reaching and in some instances require professional medical intervention and medication.
